How one school inspired students, parents and the community to go plastic free

St Theresa’s College of Cebu in the Philippines shows how  choosing plastic free alternatives can start at a young age, with small, everyday actions.

At the heart of the school’s mission is a shared commitment to going plastic free, outlined in its manuals and brought to life by staff, students, and parents.

“It’s truly fulfilling to see our students and families embrace this policy,” said Sr Asha Manoharan, Head of Community Engagement. “Their commitment shows how small actions, like swapping a plastic bag for a paper one, can build a culture of care and responsibility.”

One example of the policy  in action is the zero-waste canteen. The four stall holders agree to zero waste rules as part of their contract, and outside organisations renting the schools facilities follow the same approach. Homemade food is served in reusable containers bought from home by students and staff, and drinks are sold in glass bottles or available at a refill station.

Students are at the heart of the movement. From awareness campaigns to hands-on projects, many choose to focus on environmental protection. During Plastic Free July 2025, almost 90% of students and families made an online pledge to reduce single-use plastics at home.

The school also introduced a simple but  innovative way to track students’ plastic usage at home, fostering accountability and encouraging families to join the mission.

Reflecting on this, one science teacher noted, “It’s rewarding to witness the ripple effect—students taking the lessons they’ve learned here and inspiring their families to make more sustainable choices.”

Beyond the campus, these efforts create impact in the local community. For example, the neighbouring convenience store provides plastic free alternatives for the school’s community, and other colleges have implemented some plastic free events.

“What truly moves us is that even in small victories—like a parent telling us they’re now using reusable bags because of their child’s encouragement—we see that we’re making a difference. It’s proof that change, no matter how gradual, is meaningful.”
