Plastic Free July 2024

Are you looking for ways to be part of the solution to plastic pollution? This July, join millions of people worldwide reducing their plastic waste by choosing to refuse single-use plastic. Check out our resources and ideas below and get inspired to help  reduce plastic waste everyday at home, work, school, and even at your local café.

Getting started

Whether you’re a beginner looking for a few single-use plastics to avoid, ready to take next steps or want to share with others, we have ideas to inspire you at home, work, school, and within the community. Best of all, being part of Plastic Free July will help you to find great alternatives that can become new habits forever.

  1. Take the challenge and get ideas, solutions, stories of other participants and news from across the global movement
  2. Do the Plastic Free July Quiz (it takes less than 5 minutes) to discover the items you use and decide what you’d like to choose to refuse
  3. Decide to take your first step or really challenge yourself!

Small steps, big difference

Our theme “Small steps, big difference” reflects the impact of lots of people making change together. Plastic Free July participants from over 190 countries worldwide are making a big difference by stopping around 300 million kg of plastic polluting the world each year.

For Plastic Free July 2024 we are inviting people to make a pledge to avoid single-use cups, plastic drink bottles, or plastic food wrap. These “Top 3” items are single-use plastic items we use each day that there are easy switches for such as refilling water bottles, remembering to BYO cup or dine-in for coffee and switching to reusable containers or wax wraps instead of plastic wrap.

These “Top 3” items are single-use plastic items we use each day. There are easy switches for these items, such as:

  • Refilling water bottles instead of using disposable ones
  • Remembering to bring your own cup or dining in for coffee instead of using takeaway cups.
  • Switching to reusable containers or wax wraps instead of plastic wrap.

Sharing with others

If you want to invite others to join, there are many ways to get your community and workplace involved including Schools Program, Corporate Sponsor and Local Government membership.

As more people realise single-use coffee cups aren’t readily recycled, many are Choosing to Up Cup as a first step to make a big difference. It’s as simple as Bring, Borrow, Stay! Either bring our own reusable cup, borrow or swap a cup from some cafés, or take ten minutes and enjoy your favourite cuppa there.

Others are inspired by the Plastic Free Morning Tea: a popular way of making and sharing food, fun and conversations about plastic free solutions. People who host their own at work, home or out in the community find it’s a great way to invite others to get involved.

Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?
