Plastic Free Personal Care
One place we are likely to find an overwhelming collection of little plastic containers is our bathrooms! You may have your favourite products that just "cannot live without", but have a look at some of these great ideas and consider making time in July to do a stocktake of the contents of your bathroom cupboard. With a little focus you can swap your plastic packaged products for ones containing little or no plastic, thereby greatly reducing your bathroom's plastic footprint. Not only will your efforts reduce your reliance on single use plastic, but it will inevitably reduce your exposure to harmful synthetic chemicals contained in most commercial personal care products and therefore help you to ‘detox’ your personal care routine.
One of the most concerning issues which has come to light in recent years is the issue of plastic microbeads found in personal care products. Yep, many of those little exfoliating spheres which magically help to ‘polish’ your teeth and exfoliate your face and body are actually tiny plastic particles. The concern is that these particles are so small that they pass through our water treatment systems and therefore enter the environment where they can are being mistaken for food, and consumed by fish. Check the ingredients list on the product container and look forpolyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon. You can also download the handy Beat the MicroBead app which allows you to scan any product barcode while shopping to find out if it contains microbeads.
