Plastic Free July in Action!
Council Stories: Manly
The beautiful coastal precinct of Manly Council in Sydney have not only organised a huge range of events and activities for Plastic Free July in 2015, but they have also enlisted the Premier of NSW and Mayor to launch Plastic Free July in Manly!
Events will include: a screening of Bag It Movie at Balgowlah RSL; a Two Hands Clean Up with Council Staff; Bag It lunchtime screening for staff; a tour of the local waste facility and ecology talk; and a plastic free living workshop for the community. They are also having stands on plastic-free living at supermarkets and markets during the month.
The Plastic Bag Free Manly campaign and business initiatives to reduce plastic are also very active in this council area.

This raised awareness in the office and encouraged other staff members to sign up for the challenge.
Participants then came up with the idea of ‘Coffee Wars’ – whereby names of local cafes were put into a hat and each week one person would take all the reusable cups to a local café with the idea that coffees were ‘blind tasted’ and rated. Senior Community Development Officer Emma said "It has been really fun seeing the barrister and customers response when you rock up with a collection of coloured cups. There is at least one cafe that has given us a cup discount too".
